Single Particle Pyrolyzer

National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Description

The single particle pyrolyzer enables the study of pyrolysis on a single particle with mass up to 2 g, temperatures up to 800°C, heating rates of 50 °C/s, and mass loss resolution of 1 mg with analysis of evolved vapors. Videos recorded, allowing direct observation of particle cracking, pellet explosion, and change in radius with temperature. Insertion of 0.001” diameter wire thermocouple with a 0.002” bead allows for measurement of particle internal temperature.

Capability Bounds

The single particle pyrolyzer enables the study of pyrolysis on a single particle with mass up to 2 g, temperatures up to 800°C, heating rates of 50 °C/s, and mass loss resolution of 1 mg with analysis of evolved vapors.

Unique Aspects

Video recorded, allowing direct observation of particle cracking, pellet explosion, and change in radius with temperature.

Insertion of 0.001” diameter wire thermocouple with a 0.002” bead allows for measurement of particle internal temperature.

Availability

Typically can accommodate analysis requests within a month’s time.

Benefit

Rapid analysis of pyrolysis and gasification performance with higher heating rates than are achievable in with commercial thermogravimetric analysis and accompanying visual detail
