Micro-reactor Laboratory

National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Description

This laboratory features several batch micro-reactor systems that can be used to conduct pyrolysis and gasification of small samples (<1g) with and without catalysts. Systems include a horizontal tube furnace reactor coupled to a molecular beam mass spectrometer, a Frontier micropyrolyzer system, and two pyrolysis-MS automated reaction systems.

Capability Bounds

The horizontal/MBMS and py-MS systems operate at atmospheric pressure. The Frontier system can be used at pressures up to 500 PSI.

Unique Aspects

The Frontier micropyrolyzer features a conversion reactor followed by a catalytic upgrading reactor in tandem for investigation of in situ and ex situ catalytic reactions.

Availability

All reactor systems in this lab are available for contract work; contact the capabilities expert(s) identified above.

Benefit

Work in batch reactor systems facilitates discovery and large numbers of samples can be rapidly screened using automated injectors.

Capability Expert(s)

Steven Rowland, Calvin Mukarakate
