Hydrotreater

National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Description

NREL’s hydrotreater is designed to mimic operation of an industrial hydrotreater using small feedstock samples and/or novel catalytic materials with various form factors from powders to pellets. Feedrates of 2-5 ml/h are supported in this system.

Capability Bounds

The reactor typically runs under standard hydrotreating conditions (300 – 400C, 1 – 100 bar total pressure) and at low LHSV (0.1 – 1).

Unique Aspects

The system is designed to run unattended and can operate 24/7 for evaluation of both initial activity and catalyst life.

Availability

The system is available for contract work. Interested parties should contact the capability expert cited above.

Benefit

The hydrotreater can be used to determine hydrotreating requirements for upgrading of intermediates or final fuel finishing for bio-derived materials and feedstocks.
