High throughput screening for root phenotype to assess effects of plant growth promoting microorganisms (PGPMs) on bioenergy crops

Los Alamos National Laboratory

Description

We have developed a high-throughput screening protocol that allows us to screen multiple plant growth promoting micro-organisms (PGPMs) in short time.
We have successfully tested our high-throughput screening protocol for two bioenergy crops (Sorghum and Camelina) and other food crops (Tomato and Lettuce).

Capability Bounds

Using this high throughput method we can easily can easily screen 100-500 seedlings in one run.
Can perform multiple (10-20) experiments in a year depending on plant species.

Unique Aspects

By selecting the PGPMs in seedling stage saves the intensive labor and long waiting periods for screening for mature plant stages.

Availability

Availability by research collaboration with LANL experts.

Benefit

This high throughput protocol can be used for any crop type. Can be performed in climate controlled growth chambers and under any relevant stress conditions.
