Description
NREL’s state-of-the-art bench-scale fermentation laboratory can be used to test micro-organisms and process conditions from shake flask to 10-liter bioreactors. More than 30 bioreactors are available to facilitate rapid throughput screening.
Capability Bounds
Bioreactors from 250ml to 10-liter are supported in this facility. Gas fermentation is not supported in this laboratory.
Unique Aspects
The bioreactors feature advanced control of process conditions including temperature and pH with extensive on-line analytical.

This laboratory facilitates rapid screening of process conditions and biological catalysts for conversion of bio-based feedstocks and intermediates in a highly-automated state-of-the-art laboratory.
