Anaerobic Digestion (AD)

National Laboratory of the Rockies

Description

NLR’s AD laboratory enables R&D on at Biosafety Level 2 operations including bench scale and pilot scale equipment (in development). Systems include 2 x 10L anaerobic digesters, automatic Methane Potential Test Systems (2 x 15 bottle (500 mL) and1 x 6 bottle (2L)). Automated pH control of bench-scale anaerobic digestion bottles can be achieved. Other equipment includes electrodialysis of anaerobic digestate (0.05 – 10 L range) with automated in situ electrodialysis of anaerobic digestion coming soon.

Capability Bounds

All systems are currently at the bench-scale with pilot-scale AD capabilities coming on-line soon.

Unique Aspects

NLR researchers have experience working with municipalities and materials recycling facilities (MRF). Production, recovery, and valorization of volatile fatty acids from AD is an area of particular strength at NLR.

Availability

The laboratory is available for contract work.

Benefit

Anaerobic digestion is a well-developed commercial technology for waste disposal which has high potential for production of renewable natural gas and valuable intermediates such as volatile fatty acids.
