2-inch Fluid-bed Reaction System (2-FBR)

National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Description

The 2-FBR system is a 2-inch (diameter) continuous flow bubbling fluidized bed reactor that can be operated either in gasification or pyrolysis mode. Both fluid-bed and fixed-bed catalytic upgrading reactors are part of the system for upgrading of bio-derived intermediates (bio-oil or syngas). The system features extensive product collection capabilities and on-line analytical to allow for closure of mass balance.

Capability Bounds

Maximum feedrate is 500 g/h. Oxygen cannot be used as a reactive gas at this time.

Unique Aspects

The fluid-bed catalytic reactor features continuous addition and withdrawal of catalyst to allow for steady-state activity. This is especially critical when evaluating processes that involve rapidly deactivating catalysts. A bench-scale MS can be used to track products in and out of the catalytic upgrading reactors.

Availability

The system is available for contract work; contact one of the capability experts listed above.

Benefit

The small scale of this system facilitates experimentation using novel feedstocks and materials that may be available only in limited quantities. Excellent total mass and carbon balances can usually be obtained.
