Thermochemical Process Development Unit (TCPDU)

National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Description

Flexible pilot plant for gasification and pyrolysis of biomass and other waste carbon feedstocks at the 0.5 tonne/day scale. The TCPDU features an entrained-flow gasifier and pyrolyzer with extensive downstream processing of syngas and bio-oil. A 15 kg/h integrated riser/regenerator system is also available for testing of biomass pyrolysis and gasification or upgrading of bio-derived intermediates.

Capability Bounds

All reactors in the TCPDU operate at atmospheric pressure. At the present time, use of hydrogen as a reactant is not allowed.

Unique Aspects

NREL’s TCPDU allows for evaluation of thermochemical conversion processes at large scale where significant quantities of product can be produced.

Availability

The reaction systems are available for contract work. For booking contact capability experts listed above.

Benefit

Scale-up of lab- and bench-scale thermochemcial reaction systems are facilitated by access to the apparatus in this lab.

Capability Expert(s)

Robert Baldwin, Joshua Schaidle
